Donkeys, yesterday
One million in France at the beginning of the century, 3500 in the eighties, the extinction of the donkeys seemed inescapable: they were useless, they didn’t yield anymore after having worked for mankind for centuries at the most humble and unrewarding tasks and having contributed towards the economic activity of the country.
However, everyone agrees in saying that the domestic races represent a real traditional, cultural economic and social heritage, to witch the donkey indisputably belongs to.
To the best of our knowledge, among the Poitou donkey, the Pyrenean donkey (also known as Catalan or Gascon) is the only one that can assert to have regularly appeared in treatises of zootechny over the last and at the beginning of this century. These two races where used for the husbandry of mules, therefor they have been settled down and selected. If it may appear obvious that the traditional use of the donkey belongs to the past, it is nonetheless true that this animal can be used in various domains: tourism, the upkeep of wooded areas, pedagogical use, to keep company and for us, she-ass milk production….

The donkey milk farm of Haut-Asterac, today…
The donkey farm counts one jack and about twenty Pyrenean she-asses, and some offspring aged from 1 to 3 years (a donkey is considered adult at 3 years).
They are all living outside the whole year through and gaze summer grass, hay from natural pasture with cereals and winter horse beans.
The particularity of the asinine race lies in the two existing types:
The Gascon breed (historically from the plain)-height of the withers:1.20m up to 1.35m and the Catalan breed (from the mountains) more than 1.35m.
I’ve chosen to work with the Catalan breed since it is rarer than the Gascon type. Moreover, the taller the animals are, the more difficult it is to sustain their beauty; an interesting challenge for a breeder. Anyway, it is also a matter of taste. And it is very well known: there is no accounting for tastes!
The whey takes place 3-4 times a day, per hand, according to very strict hygiene rules.
The ass foal is taken away from its mother from the 3rd month on during daytime and replaced. It sees its mother again in the evening in order to suckle. Its presence is essential to avoid the natural ebbing. Ass foals are weaned from the 10th month.
